Who is Antisthenes? Biography and Information

Antisthenes (c. 445–365 BCE)

Antisthenes was a Greek philosopher and a pupil of Socrates. He is considered the founder of Cynicism, a school of philosophy that advocated for a simple and ascetic life in accordance with nature.

Antisthenes believed that virtue was the only good and that it could be achieved through rigorous self-discipline and independence from worldly possessions. His teachings influenced later Cynics, including Diogenes of Sinope.

Antisthenes's legacy lives on through his contributions to ethical philosophy and his influence on the development of the Cynic movement.
